Disruption warning as holiday road works revealed
BBCThe start of the school holidays will see several sets of road closures disrupting motorists across North and West Cumbria, motorists are being warned.
Cumberland Council has announced it is set to carry out eight separate roadworks schemes over the next few weeks.
The Labour-led authority said many of them fell under its commitment to spend £27.5m maintaining the area's roads, drains and footways during this financial year.
The authority's assistant director for highways and transport Karl Melville said the programme helped improve safety and "extend the life of our highway assets".
He said: "Maintaining and improving our highways network is one of the council's most important responsibilities."
Here is a list of planned roadworks happening across the council area:
- B5299 through Dalston village, resurfacing work from 20 July for up to 35 nights. The road will be closed from 18:00 BST to 03:00
- B5299 at Hodden Croft, Caldbeck, resurfacing work from 20 July for up to five days. The road will be closed while the work is carried out
- C1027 at Warwick Church Bridge, bridge repair work from 20 July for up to two weeks. The road will be closed daily between 08:30 and 15:30
- C2016 West End/Camerton Road in Great Broughton, resurfacing work from 27 July for up to seven days. There will be a full road closure, with resident access limited between 07:30 and 18:00
- U2823 Senhouse Street in Maryport, resurfacing work from 20 July for up to five days. There will be a full road closure, with access for residents and businesses maintained where possible.
- B5302 at Kelswick House, Abbeytown, resurfacing work from 27 July for up to five days. Access for residents will be limited between 07:30 and 18:00
- Bridge Street/Caldewgate in Carlisle, preparation work to improve Dow Beck culvert will start on 27 July for up to five days, with the main works starting on 3 August for four weeks. The majority of construction work will take place overnight from 20:00 to 06:00, with traffic management measures in place through the day. The McVitie's and Sainsbury's westbound bus stops will be suspended and replaced with a temporary one Opposite Milbourne Street.
Meanwhile, work started last week to resurface the A6071 in Brampton and will continue until 29 July.
Road closures will be in place on different stretches of the road, as work progresses from Carlisle Road to the Front Street junction, through to the Union Lane junction and The Nook.
All roadwork timings are subject to weather conditions, Cumberland Council said.
Melville added: "Our teams use a combination of detailed technical surveys, local knowledge and ongoing inspections to ensure investment is targeted where it is needed most, helping us deliver long-term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors."
