A man and a woman who died following a two-car collision in the Republic of Ireland have been named as a husband and wife.

Robert Marks, 86, and Kathleen Marks, who was in her 70s, were from Ballagan, Greenore in County Louth. They have been named locally.

The collision happened close to the Northern Ireland border on the R173 in The Bush at about 15:10 local time on Thursday.

The male driver of the second car and a female passenger, both in their 30s, were airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

'Deeply missed by all'

Mr Marks was the honorary president of local GAA sports club, Cooley Kickhams, who paid tribute to him and Kathleen Marks on social media.

"Robert and Kathleen were an integral part of their family's lives and of the Cooley Kickhams community, and they will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing them," they said.

"Together, they attended as many matches as possible, regardless of the circumstances, and their loyal presence on the sidelines became a familiar and cherished sight.

"We will also greatly miss Robert's attendance at our weekly lotto draws, where his wit, humour and remarkable knowledge of Louth football were always evident and enjoyed by everyone present."

Cooley Credit Union said Robert was a founding member in 1969 and "dedicated over 50 years of service...where his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment helped strengthen the institution and improve the lives of its members".

"Robert was a cherished family member, friend, and community leader.

"He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others. His positive influence extended far beyond the boardroom, touching the lives of colleagues, members, and everyone fortunate enough to know him," the union said in a post on social media.

Gardaí (Irish police) have appealed to anyone who may have camera footage of the incident to contact them.
