Man who attacked and vowed to kill partner jailed

A man with a "violent temper" who told his partner he would not stop abusing her "until one of us is dead" has been jailed.

Police said officers were called after Nathan Grant punched his partner in the ribs, arms and legs before squeezing her throat until she could not breathe.

Grant, from Long Eaton, Derbyshire, had been out on licence for a previous violent offence on the woman when he was arrested and subsequently charged.

The 33-year-old, of Collingwood Road, admitted several offences including two counts of intentional strangulation and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was jailed for four years and nine months at Derby Crown Court on Monday.

Grant also pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour at the same court when he was remanded in custody at an earlier hearing.

He was also given an extended sentence of three years as he was deemed to be dangerous and handed a restraining order banning him from having any contact with the victim.

Derbyshire Police said following the assault, Grant made comments to his partner over the phone saying "I won't stop until one of us is dead" and "I'm going to put you in a body bag".

The victim later disclosed a number of other assaults to police, including one where he bit her on the nose, and his controlling behaviour throughout their relationship, the force said.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said her relationship with Grant was a "whirlwind", adding she continues to "live in fear".

"My relationship with Nathan and all the incidents that have happened have affected me in many ways, both physically and mentally," she said.

Detective staff investigator Lucy Taylor, who led the investigation, said: "Grant is clearly a man with a violent temper who did not see the error of his ways despite serving a prison sentence.

"The abuse he inflicted on this woman has impacted on her life in many ways and will continue to do so for some time to come."
