Major city bridge sees overnight closures
Southampton City CouncilA major city bridge is to be closed overnight for the remainder of the week while roadworks take place.
Itchen Bridge in Southampton is shut from 20:00 BST for vehicles and 21:00 for pedestrians, opening at 06:00 the following day.
This phase of the ongoing maintenance, which includes resurfacing the road and footways, began overnight on Monday and will end on Saturday morning.
Southampton City Council said between 01:00 and 04:00 the Bluestar N17 bus will be free to passengers between the city side of Itchen Bridge and the Woolston centre bus stops in both directions, for the duration of the works.
The bridge will reopen as normal during the day although there will be some lane narrowing in place while works are ongoing.
Councillor Jacqui Rayment, cabinet member for transport with the council, thanked residents for their patience and said: "By carrying out these next stages now and in this way, we can finish this work safely and avoid more significant disruption in the future, helping to keep communities on both sides of the Itchen well connected for years to come."
