Construction starts on former pub site homes

Work has started to create new council homes on the site of a former pub in Wolverhampton.

Keon Homes is building the properties where the Duke of York stood on the corner of Wednesfield Road and Inkerman Street in Heath Town.

A mix of 32 one and two-bed flats and two four-bed homes are being built, after the City of Wolverhampton Council awarded the contract.

Last year's planning application for the site of the former pub, which was demolished in 2010, was the latest part of a £120m regeneration plan for the Wolverhampton estate, the authority said.

A council spokesperson said the plans for the site of the former Duke of York form the second phase of its regeneration work in Heath Town, which includes more than 100 new homes.

The first phase of the work in the area saw 40 new council homes built in Hobgate Road and Chervil Rise.

Several old and empty buildings were demolished in Heath Town as part of the £120m work and a number of existing residential blocks have been refurbished in recent years.
