Frustration over 'joke' wavy lines on road

Wavy yellow lines painted on a road in Nottinghamshire have been labelled a "joke" and an "embarrassment" by residents.

Nottinghamshire County Council said the work carried out in Arnold Lane, Gedling, was "unacceptable" and the firm responsible would be repairing it at their own expense this week.

The road had recently been resurfaced, but for a stretch of several metres the lines appear wavy, which has prompted both amusement and annoyance among neighbours.

Tina Brewster, 65, who lives just off Arnold Lane, said: "The yellow lines are just a joke... It's just a joke that it was left that way."

She added: "[It looks like] children did them. All the money that was spent, it needs to be done properly.

"It makes you feel like you've had too much wine when you look up there."

Jon Orange, 48, who was working nearby, added: "A rush job for sure, was it Friday when they did it?"

The Reform UK-led county council has said fixing the roads is a priority and it has invested millions of pounds into improvement schemes.

Residents said they were happy the potholes had been fixed but wanted the lines to be repainted.

Brewster's neighbour Kareen Russell, 63, said: "I thought my eyes were worse than they should be. I had to ask someone if I was seeing the right thing.

"I want them to come back and redo the job, and to apologise for all the noise and disturbance they've caused.

"I think it's an embarrassment to the company."

Mike Adams, Conservative councillor for the nearby Carlton East ward on the county council, said he had to pull over because he was laughing so much when he drove past.

"It was a bit like they were doing a downhill ski," he said.

"A lot of people have been quite jovial about it... but there's a number who have asked, 'How is this being replaced? Are we going to have to spend out again out of council tax to cover this bill?'

"I really, really don't want that to be the case... we need to get whoever did this work back and do the repair work free of charge.

"I'd say it was shoddy."

A Nottinghamshire County Council highways spokesperson said they could not say what the cause of the problem was.

But they added: "Resurfacing took place recently on Arnold Lane in Gedling as part of our record investment in Nottinghamshire's roads.

"The repainting of road markings following the resurfacing does not meet our quality standards and we have made it clear to the contractor who delivered the work on behalf of Via East Midlands that it is unacceptable.

"Defect notices have been raised with the contractor who will be returning to Arnold Lane later this week to repaint the lines at their own expense."
