The crash happened near the junction of Poling Street and the A27 Arundel Road at about 23:15 BST on Wednesday.

National Highways said that one of the vehicles involved had overturned.

The A27 was closed overnight but has since reopened.

The road had been closed in both directions between A284 Crossbush and the A280 Clapham, causing delays and congestion.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said that ambulance crews and an air ambulance attended the scene.

It added that four patients were treated for injuries.

"Three patients were taken to a local hospital for further treatment. However, sadly, one patient died at the scene."
