Plans submitted to revamp urban garden

Plans to improve the landscape and appearance of a green, open space in Bilston have been submitted.

Bilston Urban Garden on Stafford Street and connecting to Church Street contains grassland, pathways, landscaped beds and seating.

After public consultation, the City of Wolverhampton Council said the area would be resurfaced, have more trees and shrubs planted, and feature improvements to the street furniture.

Council leader Stephen Simkins said it was part of major investment in Bilston with a number of projects set to transform the town centre.

"The opinions of residents, businesses and visitors have helped shape these proposals for the Urban Garden and the planning submission is a major step towards delivering this scheme," he said.

Earlier this month, the revamped outdoor market opened after an £8m refurbishment project, and a major new health and well being centre is being built next to Bert Williams Leisure Centre.

The town has been award £20m in government funding through a Pride in Place programme for regeneration due to be spent over the next 10 years on projects to boost the area in consultation with local residents.

Some of the money was put towards the return of Bilston Carnival earlier this month, which was last held in 2008.
