Council targets 'long-standing' road safety issues

Luton Borough Council has set out plans to address "long-standing" safety, congestion and parking problems in Bury Park.

Officers have recommended introducing a red route in the area aimed at clearing parked cars from pavements and crossings, and increasing the time people can use disabled parking bays and loading bays.

Proposals also include increasing parking in the area, with 120 spaces near Luton Town's Kenilworth Road ground available to shoppers and visitors, except on matchdays and the day before fixtures.

The recommendations will be considered by the council's Overview and Scrutiny Board on 27 July.

A final decision will follow in August.

A council spokesperson said: "Bury Park has experienced long-standing issues relating to road safety, congestion and dangerous parking.

"Safety is our number one priority and these recommendations are intended to improve traffic flow, reduce dangerous parking and ensure pavements and key junctions remain clear," they added.

The council is currently three weeks into a 16-week improvement scheme on the nearby Hatters Way-Chaul End Lane roundabout.

Works there will allow drivers to bypass the often congested roundabout as they turn from Hatters Way into Chaul End Lane.
