Overnight closures planned for M1 safety work

A stretch of the M1 will have slip roads and lanes closed overnight for eight months to allow for "essential maintenance".

National Highways said work was needed to extend the serviceable life of safety barriers in Derbyshire between junction 28 - close to the border with Nottinghamshire - and junction 30 near Barlborough.

Work will begin on Monday and be carried out between 21:00 and 06:00 BST.

A spokesperson said: "We'll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum."

"Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause," the spokesperson added.

The first set of overnight closures, running from 20 July to 7 August, will affect lanes one and two of the M1 northbound between junctions 28 and 29.

These northbound lane closures will then move to between junctions 29 and 29a from 10 August to 18 August, before moving again to between junctions 29a and 30, from 19 August to 10 September.

The work will then switch to the southbound carriageway, with lanes closed between junctions 30 and 29a, from 11 September to 13 October.

This is followed by lane closures between junctions 29a and 29 from 14 October to 6 November, and again between junctions 29 and 28 from 9 November until 25 January 2027.

After that, work will return to the northbound side for the final phase, with lane closures between junctions 28 and 29, from 26 January 2027 to 3 March 2027.

There will also be intermittent closures of the entry and exit slip roads, as well as the Tibshelf services slip roads.

National Highways added that, where safe to do so, access for emergency service vehicles would be maintained "in emergency situations".

Work will not take place during the August bank holiday weekend, Black Friday/Cyber Monday in November, and Christmas and New Year.
