More than £278m is owed to the government in unpaid income tax from 2019, officials have said.

Jersey's government said the funds are from people who used to pay based on their previous year's income but had their tax collection paused when the system changed in 2020. Since then, islanders have paid tax on income they earn in the same year.

The government said as of mid-July, there were 23,697 taxpayers with an outstanding balance for the 2019 frozen liability.

It said those who owed money had three options - to pay in full now, in interest free payments over 17 years or pay the full amount when reaching State pension age of 67.

The government said those affected had until 30 September to choose their preferred option.

If they did not choose an option, they will be put on the 17-year payment plan.

It said a dedicated support team had been set up and islanders with questions or concerns could call 440300 or they could go to the office on Union Street in St Helier.
