Man dies in water off the coast
Caroline Briggs/BBCA man has died after getting into difficulty in the sea.
Aged in his 20s, he was pronounced dead at Cullercoats Bay, North Tyneside, after emergency services including an air ambulance were called there at about 18:25 BST on Sunday.
Northumbria Police said a second man, also in his 20s, was in a serious but stable condition in hospital having also been recovered from the water.
Ch Insp Simon Wotton described it as a "tragic incident".
He added: "We'd like to thank our partner agencies who were there working alongside police last night, and I am sure they are just as saddened by this outcome as we are.
"We know this will be a greatly shocking and distressing incident for those involved and for the local community."
The North East Ambulance Service said three road ambulances were sent to Cullercoats along with an air ambulance, with one patient taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, Northumberland.
A report has been made to the coroner and the dead man's next of kin have been informed.
