About 300 tonnes of scrap metal is ablaze at a scrap yard with fire chiefs warning it could take days to make the area safe.

The fire was spotted at Global Ardour on Longridge Road at about 01:25 BST on Saturday.

Lancashire Fire Service commander Ian Armistead said: "There is a significant smoke plume coming from the incident which will be visible for some time."

He said the blaze was contained but warned the operation was likely to be a "protracted" affair, lasting "well into the weekend if not into early next week".

Armistead added: "Firefighters and onsite staff have worked hard throughout the night to ensure the fire is contained, but there is a significant smoke plume coming from the incident."

In a statement later on Saturday morning, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident had been scaled back.

The service added: "Firefighters remain in attendance carrying out dampening down operations."
