Crews to remain at moorland fire into next week

Crews will remain at the site of a major moorland fire into early next week, officials have said.

Firefighters were first called to Tintwistle Moor, near Glossop in Derbyshire, on 24 June, where about 260 hectares (642 acres) had been affected and a major incident was declared on 13 July.

On Tuesday, the fire service said 75 firefighters and workers from partner agencies were at the site, along with three helicopters, to contain the fire, manage hotspots and deal with flare-ups.

The A628 is expected to remain closed in both directions between the A57 at Hollingworth and the A616 at Flouch until at least Monday, the fire service said.

The fire service has urged members of the public not to ignore road closure signs "to allow our emergency responders and partner agencies safe access to the affected areas as operations continue".

People have also been warned to stay away from areas affected by the fire, and to avoid using barbecues or starting campfires on moorland.
