It's difficult for India. You've got two set batters and there's no real scoreboard pressure.

Maybe they just bowl out Jasprit Bumrah at the other end to try and create some pressure.

England are just doing the job that they need to do.

    Target 234

A rare boundary is greeted with slightly ironic cheers from the Sophia Gardens crowd. It's a grim short ball from Axar Patel and Joe Root's sweep beats Jasprit Bumrah to the rope.

Another eight knocked off England's target.

When does Shubman Gill deploy Bumrah's final two overs?

As of now, the way these two have batted, they've looked comfortable. They've just picked up the singles, so how do you get a wicket? The batters aren't looking like they'll change anything up so the onus is on India.

You get a lot of cricket for your money in an ODI.

    Target 234

Prasidh Krishna returns to the attack. He concedes two singles off his first five deliveries, mops his brow with a towel, and finishes the over with a dot.

Crucially, no wicket. Joe Root and Will Jacks have put on 49 (68) for the sixth wicket.

I think Shubman Gill should gamble with one of his premier fast bowlers.

Joe Root and Will Jacks are tackling this chase in sensible fashion.

    Another five runs knocked off.

Axar Patel (1-27) only has two overs left.

India are going to have to break this partnership if they want a chance in this.

Maybe they will turn back to the seamers.

Once again Root shows his class and understanding of how to play 50-over games. If only the other 'batters' understood.

At what point does Shubman Gill go back to his seamers?

  12. Eng 167-5published at 35 overs

Will Jacks waits in his crease and absolutely lamps Shivam Dube through point. However, he has to settle for a single.

It's one of six in the over.

This is now four consecutive 75+ scores for Joe Root, tying for the most consecutive in ODIs.

He does like Lord's, can he make it five?

The fundamental issue for this England team is that they believe ODIs are closer to T20 than Test cricket. You cannot play with a T20 mentality in ODI cricket outside of the first powerplay.

    Target 234

An expensive over by Axar Patel's miserly standards. Three singles and a wide.

Joe Root has 75 (112), Will Jacks has 8 (20).

23 of Axar's 36 deliveries so far today have drifted more than 2.0°, with only Keshav Maharaj (2.3°) finding more drift on average than Axar Patel (2.2°) does in ODIs.

Ishan Kishan is doing a lot of talking in between deliveries behind the stumps.

Joe Root is waving his bat towards the dressing room. Does he want a replacement?

Four singles. Two dots. The required rate is hovering around 4.5 per over.

It's been a gripping game, it really has. Both sides have taken wickets when needed to get back into the contest.

I still think England should have it from here though.

  20. Eng 153-5published at 32 overs

Axar Patel concedes a single. The good news for England is he's only got four overs left.
