England captain Harry Brook speaking to Test Match Special: "Extremely satisfying. I thought we had a really good day. There were a couple of stand-out periods. The period when we had Will Jacks and Sam Curran bowling at the same time. Trying to get as many dot balls as we could. And that partnership with Jacks and Root, very calm and controlled trying to take the game deep.

"I enjoy captaining, it can be frustrating at times. Today was a great bowling performance, after the way they started. It's good fun, trying to suss out what fields to set to bowlers.

"Who knows what Lord's is going to present, but we look forward to assessing conditions."

On how he would have felt being left not out on 99: "I'd have definitely been the same as him, he wanted the game over and done with."

  4. 'We just couldn't get the momentum'published at 21:01 BST

India captain Shubman Gill speaking to Test Match Special: "I think we were in a really good position at the end of 20-30 overs. We lost too many wickets towards the end of the middle overs. We thought 300-310 would be a good total on this wicket, we just couldn't get the momentum.

"We tried to create as much pressure as we can. We were right in the game until about 35 overs, but we knew we had to keep taking wickets. We were a bowler short with Washington."

On how he would have felt being left not out on 99: "I would not have taken that single in the second to last over!"

I thought at one point it was going to be 300 for India. It's a good wicket but there was bounce in it.

I don't think some of the India players will be used to the bounce that Archer was able to get. Once England picked up a few wickets, India couldn't play with the freedom. Iyer was left stranded with the tail-end.

India will be disappointed with the cheap wickets they gave away.

Chasing 234, England had a nightmare start, losing both openers in the opening four overs before Harry Brook threw away his wicket for a run-a-ball 16.

However, Joe Root anchored his side home, putting on 41 (51) with Sam Curran and 31 (40) with Jos Buttler before a crucial 72-run sixth-wicket stand with Will Jacks.

Like Brook, Jacks gifted away his wicket, hitting straight to Virat Kohli in the covers, but Gus Atkinson saw England home alongside Root.

They put on 38 (25), with Root unbeaten on 99 (133) and Atkinson 23 (16).

England won by four wickets with 35 balls to spare.

Let's recap the day, shall we?

It was a frustrating outing for India with the bat.

Shreyas Iyer (66 off 71) and Virat Kohli (65 off 66) made half-centuries but from 104-1 in the 18th over and 178-3 in the 32nd, they slumped to 233 all out in 44 overs.

Jofra Archer starred with 3-47, with Saqib Mahmood (2-52) and Gus Atkinson (3-50) sharing five wickets.

The question at Lord's is, will anyone get Joe Root out?

  9. Postpublished at 20:50 BST

Joe Root finishes unbeaten on 99 off 133 balls, including nine fours.

Gus Atkinson made a handy 23 not out (16) at number eight, with Will Jacks (30 off 44) and Sam Curran (26 off 31) the other notable scorers for England.

It is quite selfless of him.

Without Joe Root, we wouldn't have had a game at Edgbaston. It's a classic chase innings.

No one else seems to have the patience to play this kind of cricket on this team. They need to take note of how it's done. He's barely missed a ball.
