Graham Webster gave Montrose a 37th-minute lead

Dundee United's hopes of progressing from the Premier Sports Cup group stage are in the balance after they were stunned by third-tier Montrose.

Jim Goodwin's top-flight side, who needed a stoppage-time penalty to beat Stirling Albion on Saturday, were undone by a first-half goal from Graham Webster at Links Park.

Webster capitalised on a defensive lapse by Ross Graham to finish past Jack Walton.

Kieran Freeman cleared off the line as Idjessi Metsoko threatened an equaliser for United.

Stirling Albion, Arbroath, Montrose and United all sit on three points in Group B but Arbroath and Montrose have a game in hand, with Spartans bottom on no points from two games.

The Tangerines host Arbroath on Saturday.
