Aberdeen boss Stephen Robinson liked what he saw from Lewis Smith as the winger made his competitive debut for the Dons against Brora Rangers on Tuesday night.
The attacker, who joined from Livingston at the start of the week, was in the starting line-up as the Dons defeated Brora Rangers 2-0 in their League Cup group stage opener.
The 26-year-old played an hour before being replaced by Toyosi Olusanya.
"I'm not sure he was expecting it," Robinson told club media of the decision to start Smith.
"But we wanted to introduce him straight away, get him into our way of thinking.
"It wasn't a brilliant pitch for wingers, traveling with the ball was hard and bobbling everywhere which slows it down a little bit, but he gets 60 minutes under his belt.
"He understands now what we want from him as well in possession. Out of possession we didn't really get tested, but we're delighted to have Lewis on board and we believe him and Tony Yogane will be exciting going forward."

Aberdeen have sold striker Marko Lazetic to Armenian Premier League runners-up Noah for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old Serb joined the Dons from AC Milan last summer but made just 14 starts as well as 22 substitute appearances, scoring four times.
Lazetic had signed a contract until summer 2029 but did not figure in manager Stephen Robinson's plans for the coming season.
Robinson told his club website: "I spoke to Marko towards the end of last season and we both agreed that a move would be the best outcome for everyone.
"It took a little time to find the right opportunity, but we've now reached an agreement with FC Noah that works for all parties."
Belgrade-born Lazetic came through the youth ranks with local club Red Star before joining AC in 2022 and then had loan spells with Rheindorf Altach, Fortuna Sittard and Serbian club TSC before joining Aberdeen.
He now joins a Noah side who finished second behind Ararat-Armenia as they looked to repeat their first title win in 2025 but did win their domestic cup.
Noah face Zimbru Chișinau of Moldova in the second round of Conference League qualifying later this month.

Goals from Brad Lyons and Dylan Lobban helped Aberdeen to a 2-0 win over Linfield in their final pre-season friendly.
Lyons got the Dons up and running in Belfast after six minutes when he turned home Toyosi Olusanya's pass.
Lobban grabbed the second shortly before half-time after Tony Yogane set up the young defender. He took a touch before sending a clinical finish into the back of the net from eight yards out.
Stephen Robinson's side begin their new season on Tuesday evening as they travel to Brora Rangers in the League Cup.

Stephen Robinson is preparing for his first full season as Aberdeen manager
After a turbulent 2025-26 campaign that swung from Scottish Cup glory to relegation worries, Aberdeen head into a new season with Stephen Robinson at the helm and a major rebuild under way.
In the latest BBC Scottish Football Podcast, Charlotte Cohen is joined by Aberdeen supporter Beth Wallace and Press & Journal chief sports writer Ryan Cryle to reflect on the end of the Jimmy Thelin era, the challenges facing the club and the expectations for the months ahead.
The panel discuss a busy summer of recruitment, the search for goals, concerns over last season's defensive frailties and how Robinson wants his side to play.
They also assess the pressure on the manager, the role of key players like Kevin Nisbet and Toyosi Olusanya and whether the Dons can re-establish themselves as contenders for Europe.

Nesta Guinness-Walker has joined Aberdeen on a two-year contract after the 26-year-old English left-back departed relegated Northampton Town.
Guinness-Walker had spent two years with The Cobblers and made 43 appearances last season, 34 of them starts, as they finished bottom of League One.
The product of the Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur youth systems told Aberdeen's website: "I'm buzzing to be here.
"As soon as Aberdeen showed interest, I was keen to get the deal done.
"The club has a rich history, the fans look amazing and, after speaking to the manager, the ambition here was clear."
Guinness-Walker started his senior career with the Metropolitan Police then had spells with Reading and Stevenage before joining Northampton.
Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson said of his ninth summer signing: "Nesta brings real pace and energy down the side and his experience will also help Emmanuel [Gyamfi] and Mitchel [Frame] with their continued development.
"He has played extensively in the English Championship and League One and was named Northampton's player of the year last season.
"He will need a few weeks to get up to speed as his season finished earlier, but our team behind the scenes will create a tailored programme to help him integrate and be ready for action as quickly as possible."

Aberdeen midfielder Alfie Stewart has returned to Inverness Caledonian Thistle for a third season on loan.
Having helped Caley Thistle retain their League 1 status two seasons ago, the 19-year-old made 48 appearances and scored eight goals last season as they won the title to return to the Championship.
Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson told his club website: "Alfie is a talented young player who has performed well in pre-season training, but as part of his wider development plan, it is vital he continues to gain exposure to regular first-team football."
Stewart joins another product of Aberdeen's youth system, striker Alfie Bavidge, for a third loan spell at Caledonian Stadium.

Alexander Jensen is returning to Sweden
Elfsborg have signed full-back Alexander Jensen from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee, with Dons manager Stephen Robinson saying the Swedish club had made "a good offer".
Dane Jensen, 24, played 55 times for Aberdeen following his January 2025 move, scoring once. He previously played for two clubs in his homeland and is returning to Sweden after playing for Brommapojkarna before moving to Pittodrie.
He helped the Dons win the 2025 Scottish Cup final.
"We received a good offer from Elfsborg for Alex and it's one we all felt was right," Robinson told the Aberdeen website.
"Alex is a great lad who always gave his best for the club, but I was honest with him in saying that he probably wouldn't be an automatic starter next season.
"There is already strong competition in that area of the pitch with Nicky Devlin and Dylan Lobban, while both Lewis Mayo and Brad Lyons are also comfortable playing there.
"Despite that, Alex has continued to train brilliantly and conduct himself in an exemplary manner. I can't speak highly enough of his professionalism.
"He leaves with a Scottish Cup winner's medal and the thanks of everyone at Pittodrie and Cormack Park. We wish him every success back in Sweden."
Robinson eyes 'two or three' signings to complete squadpublished at 10:42 BST 5 July

Manager Stephen Robinson says he is "two or three" signings short of completing Aberdeen's summer squad building.
The Northern Irishman was speaking after a 1-0 defeat by Twente during their pre-season training stint in the Netherlands on Saturday.
"It was certainly a test against a top-level side and that's what we wanted," Robinson told Red TV.
"We wanted to be tested and to find out what we need to fix and you want to see the fitness levels of the boys.
"It was a good performance. Really solid, really organised, we pressed really well at times and we should have scored two or three goals, possibly a penalty as well."
Aberdeen have made eight signings in Robinson's first summer transfer window in charge.
"There's maybe two or three positions we need to really finish off the squad," he admitted.
Ayoub Mouloua, the Moroccan forward signed after leaving Fath Union Sport in his country's top flight, did not feature against Twente but could play against Ross County on Tuesday or Linfield on Saturday as Aberdeen complete their pre-season.
"His season's only finished three weeks ago, so he will still have relatively good fitness levels," Robinson said.
"He's a goalscorer, he's what we need. Scottish football is frantic, it is different to any league in the world, some of it good, some of it bad, but it is a unique league and it'll take a bit of adjustment.
"But, in terms of fitness levels, he should be ready to hit the ground running next week."

The versatile Dons prospect with 'a skill very hard to teach'published at 11:34 BST 1 July

While focus is on Aberdeen's transfers this close season, arguably one of their most intriguing bits of business has been midfielder Findlay Marshall signing a new contract.
Not so long ago, the academy graduate seemed destined for the Pittodrie exit.
But a standout season on loan at Championship side Arbroath, combined with the March appointment of Dons head coach Stephen Robinson, resulted in the 20-year-old putting pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Pittodrie until summer 2028.
And his old boss at Gayfield, Red Lichties co-manager David Gold, told BBC Scotland: "He has a skill that is very hard to teach.
"When you have got that skill, it can be implemented at a higher level as well and that is a real knack for getting in the right place at the right time. As a goalscoring opportunity, he gets them, he is always there, he is always in and around it.
"That is a credit to himself, he is fantastic at it, so I just think that is something he can really transfer to a higher level.
"He is always fit, he is robust, he looks after himself.
"It is not going to be easy for him, he will be under no illusion about that as well but if you are asking me can he grow to that level and really go and be a Scottish Premiership star? Then absolutely."
The season before last, Marshall enjoyed an impressive campaign in League 1 with Cove Rangers, scoring eight times in 38 appearances.
But it was in the second tier at Arbroath where he really caught the eye.
He established himself as a star performer at Arbroath, netting 15 goals in 47 games as the Gayfield team finished third.
Having seamlessly adapted to the challenge every time he has stepped up a level, he will be hoping to do so again by cementing his place in the Aberdeen first team.
And Gold said: "He is fantastic in terms of his ability on the ball, he is both sided, probably equally as strong as each other.
"He has a great temperament to the game, he is never too high, never too low. His attitude is absolutely fantastic and he wants to learn.
"We saw many different parts of his game. A lot of people will see Findlay for the goals he scored for us but he actually played five different positions for us across the midfield, so he showed a versatility for us as a player.
"He has got a good head on his shoulders to go and do really well and kick on in the future as well."
