Michael van Gerwen has played like this for three or four years now. This is the new normal for him.

There are spells when he shows what he can do but there are those inconsistencies.

He still has that hunger though and that showed when he won the ProTour the other week but he's going to have to accept that he isn't going to win as much anymore and he has to turn his attentions to protecting his ranking.

    Humphries v Van Gerwen

Luke Humphries talking to Sky Sports: "The way I've been playing, there's been some great results and my averages have been really good and my doubles have been better since I went back to my old darts so I just want to keep going and pushing and win tonight and keep going."

On his win in the Players Championship on Monday: "It was probably the best I've ever played in the Players Championship since i've been there. I just want to keep pushing and I know I can get to higher levels. I know with my doubles going in better I can get to a higher level."

On if anything has changed recently: "My momentum has changed - I've been going really well. It's been on my side recently. You've seen how deadly I've been recently with my scoring and doubling so if I can keep that up I know I can be a force to be reckoned with."

This would undoubtedly have been the game of the night if a place in the top four was at stake, although both players already know their play-off fate.

'Cool Hand' has been far closer to his best in the past two weeks, reaching the final in Leeds before winning the night in Birmingham seven days ago to seal his spot at finals night.

As for Michael van Gerwen, it all started so promisingly with victory on night one in Newcastle, but the Dutchman has been too inconsistent since then.

Nevertheless, this could still be a tasty match-up.

They have faced each other four times in this year's Premier League, and there's nothing to separate them, with both winning two matches apiece.

However, 'Cool Hand' has won 10 of his 14 career Premier League games against 'Mighty Mike'.
