That just abut does it for the opening round.

Not a bad day on the links, was it?

Royal Birkdale gave up plenty of birdies this morning, but it started to bear its teeth as the day wore on.

Thanks for joining us. We'll be back bright and breezy tomorrow, so catch you then!

  2. 'Too many stupid mistakes' - McIlroypublished at 21:15 BST

Rory McIlroy reflects on a rollercoaster opening 72 that included four birdies and six bogeys:

"I'll start with the positives. I drove the ball incredibly well. I took the golf course on off the tee. Obviously with the positions that I put myself in off the tee, I feel like I obviously should have shot a better score. Played the hard holes well. Birdied 13, 15 and 18 on the back."

Admitting that he struggled with the speed of the greens, he added: "Sort of felt like I got it going a little bit, but yeah, just too many stupid mistakes. But every time I made a stupid mistake, thankfully I made a birdie to sort of keep myself in it.

"[I'm] not too far away. Hopefully we'll get the better conditions tomorrow and maybe the greens are a little bit smoother in the morning. Go out there and shoot a good one and get myself right back in it for the weekend."

  4. Lowry 'pretty happy' with startpublished at 20:59 BST

Shane Lowry is pleased with his day's work - the 2019 champion mixed five birdies and four bogeys to card one under and sit four shots off the lead.

"Yeah, like results, score-wise, I'm pretty happy with that," said the Irishman.

"The wind switch in the afternoon made the course play a little more difficult. So it was important I didn't get caught leaderboard watching and see what the leader guys were doing.

"I feel like hopefully we're going to get that nice easterly wind that they had tomorrow morning. I felt like it was tricky. I felt like I was very in control of my game myself. 69 is a pretty decent start."

'Methodical' Suber talks through playing in Europe for the first time

The final groups are closing out their first rounds of the 154th Open Championship.

Here are the main headlines from day one at Royal Birkdale:

    • American debutant Jackson Suber is the surprise leader, thanks to an opening-round 65.
    • England's Dan Brown and Im Sung-jae of South Korea are at four under par, while Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Young and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre are in the group at three under.
    • Collin Morikawa and world number one Scottie Scheffler ended two under, while England's Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood, playing in front of a home crowd at Birkdale, finished one under.
    • Masters champion Rory McIlroy (+2), in-form Matt Fitzpatrick (+2), recent US Open winner Wyndham Clark (+3) and England's Justin Rose (+5) are in the group of players with work to do on Friday to ensure they make the halfway cut.
  6. Cantlay playing the lastpublished at 20:54 BST

    Cantlay E (17)

Patrick Cantlay has been quietly going about his business in one of the later groups on day one.

A birdie on the par-five 17th means he's level par heading down the 18th.

  7. McIlroy and Fitzpatrick have mountain to climbpublished at 20:49 BST

One of the more befuddling rounds in Rory McIlroy's recent major championship outings.

Four birdies, six bogeys. He made a six on both par-fives and his putter deserted him at times, missing three four-footers.

He looked a little lost out there, a bit like the third round of last week's Scottish Open when he slumped to a 73 after starting 65-66.

He'll need something in the mid-60s tomorrow and the same can be said for Matt Fitzpatrick. One of the hottest players on the planet this year, he didn't have his best stuff and will probably work in a late-night range session before heading back out in the morning.

What an end to what had been such a disciplined round of golf from Xander Schauffele. Paying the penalty for finding the bunker at the 18th.

In it goes for Rory McIlroy. How very Rory McIlroy. He shows the ball to the crowd and he raises his putter. A brilliant birdie.

  10. McIlroy birdies last as Schauffele makes sixpublished at 20:45 BST

    McIlroy +2 (72), Schauffele +1 (71), Fitzpatrick +2 (72)

Having already splashed out of the fairway bunker, Xander Schauffele missed the green right with his third but plays a wonderful little bump and run to give himself a five-footer for bogey.

But he's missed it! That's a bruising double bogey to finish for the American and he'll sign for a 71.

Matt Fitzpatrick was disgusted with his second shot - not for the first time today - but having narrowly avoided the greenside bunker, he delights the crowd with some short-game wizardry to secure a closing par.

And Rory McIlroy finishes a trying day in the grand manner - an excellent birdie three and that's a 72. Certainly not the start he'd envisaged - he'll need a run of birdies early doors tomorrow.

What a shot from Rory McIlroy. Glorious from the Masters champion. This round has had everything. It has hit the heights from time to time, and it has hit the depths as well.

You just never know what Rory McIlroy's going to do next.

After a fine drive at 18, he plays a stunning approach that lands on the bank on the left edge of the green and trickles down to four feet. A closing birdie perhaps? He needs it.

Impressed that Cam Young has made par at the 18th. He gave himself a chance of a par, and that is what you need to do in Open Championships.

  16. Young ends two off the leadpublished at 20:34 BST

    Young -3 (67), Clark +3 (73), Aberg +1 (71)

Oh wow - Cameron Young ends in style! It's only for a par, but making a putt from 15 or so feet is an excellent way to finish.

He had found a bunker off the tee and had to splash out onto the fairway, but he recovered well from there.

A 67 for Young, while Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg both finish over par for the day.

  17. 'The course has not given much out'published at 20:29 BST

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have enjoyed it. I am not going to lie, this morning was a little flat. A lot of expectation on Justin Rose, and that didn't happen.

This afternoon has been more interesting. It's been good watching Shane Lowry and Brooks Koepka figure the back nine out. The course has not given much out today.

There has not been one hole where everyone is making birdie.

  18. McIlroy makes sixth bogeypublished at 20:26 BST

Matt Fitzpatrick is first to go, for his birdie. Nope, nothing's happened for him on the greens and he isn't alone in that regard.

Xander Schauffele played a cracking third from the bunker after a wild second but his putt just trickles off to the right.

And Rory McIlroy misses another one. Another six. Another bogey. Another strange hole.

Rory McIlroy is crouched down low like a wicketkeeper. He called in Harry Diamond to find the solution to this conundrum. This was really awkward. We often refer to Lee Trevino talking about Seve [Ballesteros] at St. Andrews. 'A touch of class, baby'.

Aaron Rai judges his birdie putt superbly and has the simplest of tap ins for par. One birdie, two bogeys, 15 pars for England's US PGA Championship winner.

Here's Brooks Koepka tidying up. Ugh. That's ugly. Pulled the four-footer. And that's a bogey finish.

Hopefully no dramas for Shane Lowry. Dead centre. Five birdies, four bogeys in a rollercoaster round.
