Can you bring your squishy toy on a plane?

Summer is well and truly underway!

If you're heading on holiday, you might want to bring some toys with you.

But if you're getting on a plane, it's important to check that your luggage, and everything in it, is allowed through security.

Airports have rules about what you are allowed to bring onto planes, including strict limits on the amount of liquids in your hand luggage.

And because some squishies are filled with gel, it is important to check the rules before you try and bring them with you.

So, we asked some UK airports what their advice is and what the government says...

The government helps airports with their rules so that they can make sure everyone is kept safe.

The government department that does this, is called the Department for Transport.

We asked them if they have any advice about bringing squishies on a plane.

They said: "No matter how adorable your squishy dumpling is, airport security rules still apply."

The department advised checking with the airport you are flying from before you travel.

Sometimes airports have different technology for security checks.

But if in doubt, the department said: "The safest place is in your hold luggage."

Hold luggage means the bag that gets taken away into the plane's hold and doesn't stay with you.

Read on for guidance from some airports in the UK.

Glasgow Airport said that rules are set by the Department for Transport.

But they did note that if there is liquid or gel inside your squishy toy then it must follow security's rule that liquid should be under 100ml.

Edinburgh Airport told us that it's best to go to the Department for Transport as they set the security guidance for all UK airports even if they have different technology.

Gatwick Airport told us that squishy toys do have to go through security if they are in your hand luggage and would be checked as normal.

Whilst they are normally allowed through airport security, sometimes certain materials need extra security checks so security officers need to examine them.

And if they can't ensure the item will be safe, then it would not be allowed through security.

That's not just for squishy toys though, that applies to everything people bring through security!

Manchester Airport said their advice is that "all but very small squishy toys should be placed in hold baggage".

That's because many squishy toys contain liquid.

Smaller squishies are under 100ml which is fine to bring through.

But larger versions are not and the problem is that as they don't have measurements printed on them, security staff have to estimate their size.

Birmingham Airport said just like any item carried in your cabin baggage, squishies are required to clear security screening.

"Should any item fail to clear the security check, the item would not be permitted to travel," they said.

Belfast City Airport said squishies that contain gel are subject to the airport's security rules around liquids, gels, and pastes.

In this airport, liquids of up to two litres can be brought through security in hand luggage.

Cardiff Airport encouraged passengers to check their website before you travel.
