Gym music: Can listening to certain songs improve your workout?

BBC World Service Highlights

Available for over a year

“There’s hundreds of studies that have shown how listening to music can improve your endurance, reduce perceived exertion, and help you sustain effort for longer”, according to Victoria Williamson, a lecturer in music psychology. She explains that listening to music can release chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine, and this can improve a person’s performance when they are working out. “This helps people associate exercise with positive feelings”. She explains that different rhythms play an important part when it comes to influencing the core areas of a person’s brain. She says that listening to certain types of music in the gym or when working out can help motivate people. “Those neurochemicals are what convinces us to keep going at the end of the day.”.
