Gary Lineker and social media – the BBC's new rules

Ever since Tim Davie became director general of the BBC, he's made it his mission to ensure the organisation is impartial. It's why there are strict rules about what news presenters can post on social media. But there are other high profile presenters who are seen as the face of the BBC, presenters like Gary Lineker of Match of the Day who tweeted back in March that the government's language about a new asylum policy was "not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s". There were plenty of complaints. And now there are new BBC rules governing what those who present flagship programmes – like Match of the Day, the Apprentice, Strictly, Top Gear and on music radio stations – can say.
