An Indian court has ruled an archaeological excavation should take place at a disputed site in the northern town which has become a flashpoint between Hindus and Muslims in India. More than 2000 people were killed in religious riots in 1992 sparked by the destruction of a 16th-century Mosque by Hindu extremists. They said the mosque had been built on the site of an ancient temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram.
