Good morning. This weekend new Wimbledon champions will hold up their trophies on centre court: I have always loved tennis. As a child, I remember my parents upgrading my wooden racquet to a graphite fibre, nylon injection racquet with John McEnroe’s signature on it! I felt special! Immediately I felt the difference: absorbing less of the ball’s impact, the lighter racquet meant I could swing faster and hit at pace …. But interestingly, this new explosion of power did not eliminate errors - in fact it was sometimes harder to keep the ball under control: We struggle to sit with power: the athlete who takes shortcuts by taking steroids to have more power does as much damage as the bully who explodes with raw power to exert dominance: Pride can cloud us from having a true accurate assessment of who we are and what we can do. - Meekness by contrast is not weakness or hiding in the shadows - but it was traditionally understood as power under control - like a powerful warhorse working in tandem with its master … Jesus had all the Father’s power made available to him and yet he didn’t use it to achieve celebrity status but in tandem with his Father brought kingdom flourishing This weekend, there might only be one winner on Wimbledon’s centre court - but how might we use the strength God gives us not to enhance ouselves or status but to bring beauty, goodness and flourishing in this world … and so we pray: May the God of meekness bless you. May you acknowledge the truth of who you are in God's eyes: fearfully, wonderfully made! May this truth penetrate your awareness as you stand before your friends and proclaim your giftedness and call their gifts from them. May the God of meekness be with you. Amen
