Mahler's 5th Symphony
The London Symphony Orchestra under chief Conductor Antonio Pappano performs Elgar's Enigma Variations and Mahler's Symphony no.5 at the Barbican in London.
Antonio Pappano conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in two turn-of-the-century works, separated by just three years. Elgar's Enigma Variations were an immediate success at their premiere in 1899, portraying his family and friends in a series of miniature portraits. Then, after the interval, Mahler's mighty 5th Symphony takes us on a journey from darkness to light and includes one of the most rapturous slow movements in all music.
Recorded last month at the Barbican and presented by Martin Handley.
