Make a birdhouse feeding station

Make our brilliant DIY birdhouse feeder and attract all sorts of birds to your garden! If you don't have a green space of your own to hang it, you could make it as a gift.

step by step guides for making bird feeders out of an orange and an empty drinks carton
You will need
  • Empty juice carton
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Wooden skewer or stick
  • Paint to decorate (acrylic works best)
  • Bird seed

Step One

Make sure your juice carton is clean and dry, do not skip this step 😄

Use a ruler and draw a rectangle to create a window at the front of your birdhouse. We have measured out a rectangle that is 5cm wide and 8cm long. You can make your window in any shape that you like.

Step Two

Carefully cut out your window shape with scissors. You may need an adult to help you with this, as it’s a bit tricky!

Step Three

Now it’s time to decorate! You can paint your birdhouse feeder in any design you like. Be creative!

Step Four

Once you have a fabulous, decorated birdhouse, it’s time to make a ledge for birds to sit on. To make the ledge, carefully make a hole underneath the window you created using a pencil, this can be fiddly, so grab your adult again if you need to. Push a wooden skewer or stick through the hole and there you have it, a sweet perch for your bird friends to land on.

Step Five

Next, carefully pierce a hole at the top of your carton and attach some string.

Finally, fill your birdhouse feeder with bird seed and hang it outside. If you’re lucky some birds will come and visit.

Top Tip - If you want to make a roof for your birdhouse, you can add some dried-out twigs or lollypop sticks to the top of your carton – we think this looks top notch!
