Twenty four people have been killed on the Stocksbridge bypass since it opened 14 years ago.

Unlike conventional machines, the new cameras track vehicles for the whole stretch of road rather than just at a set point.

But campaigners say a central barrier is needed to stop people overtaking.

'Drive sensibly'

They also want to see a reduction in the speed limit and fatal accidents signs on the road.

The cameras are part of a £2.3m package of improvements designed to deter speeding and reduce the number of accidents on the A616.

Mick Spink, an area manager for the Highways Agency, said: "The scheme is a trial and we will review it with the police at the end to see how successful it has been.

"We want drivers to drive sensibly along the bypass, and 60 mph is a sensible speed.

"If we get the accident rate down we may not have to reduce the speed limit."
